One of the most beautifully natural looking stones in the world, the travertine is produced over a long time by nature and formed from a long contact with natural subterranean hot springs. The stones take on a uniquely striking warm and inviting texture due to the hot springs temperature of up to 100° Celsius. Turkish Travertine has one of the best reputations due to the many hot springs found in Western Turkey than run up to these temperatures. There are other commercial centres of travertine found in Spain, Iran, and Italy, but Turkey has been first to develop this niche market and extracts some wonderful varieties.

Travertine Classic

The name is as this finish would suggest. A truly classical looking stone finish offering the most popular look and feel. Already an international best seller and sought after by all categories of the best architects Travertine Classic presents the full beauty in the wealth of appeal as a natural stone. The beige and light brown sometimes presents slight variations with white and brown Used also for its versatility you will see its merits adorning both walls and floors and not just outstanding building block utilisation.

Travertine Light

Travertine Light is a much lighter hue as this handsome shade benefiting from mostly beige tones a style that can be used for all purposes. The higher quality sheen is saved for export markets and the slightly lesser quality for internal consumption.

Travertine Noce

This deeply gorgeous darker tone will fascinate many as the darker beige and brown colours are set off by the Travertine holes, a natural part of the stone. This gives the Travertine Noce an even darker quality and distinct appeal. Full of character this style will always be a popular choice by consumers.

Travertine Walnut

The Travertine Walnut identified as the slightly rarer shade of stone as it encompasses more than just the famous rich tones of its peers. With subtle aspects of green and yellow delicately mixed in with the familiar brown markings, this variety is for a more specialist market.

Travertine Yellow

Although not receiving the same popularity of the brown and beige colours, the Travertine Yellow is abundantly natural in feel, and with a few flicks of brown and white can be utilised in many guises thus making it a worthy alternative to the browns.

Travertine Red

The Travertine Red is a vibrant red with red variations of darker shades and also white glimpses. Though not as common as all the above, it still has its market place, but due to rarity has fewer quarries in production for the reduced demand.

There are numerous black coloured marble in the world, from Spain to Turkey, China to India, the selection is considerable but the problems normally comes from lack of regular supply, uncertain definition of grades and non-uniform look.

But which are then the most reliable black marble choices? We present here some options of black marble that currently have reliable supply, a decent black colour and could be considered as good reference black marble for the supply of different projects.

Negro Marquina

Perhaps the most known black marble, the Negro Marquina is a beautiful and unique black coloured marble, with fine grain and occasional areas with white vein. It is extracted in Spain and is a preferential black marble to be used on flooring, coverings and diverse interior decoration.

Toros Black

The Toros Black is a black marble, with fine grain and uniform background. It has a deep black colour and several white vein throughout its surface. It can present several variations, which can be quite distinct from the original black coloured one. These are extracted in the same quarry but have major differences in terms of colour and vein. This is a Turkish marble.

Black Pearl

Another Turkish black marble, the Black Pear is perhaps the most clean black marble one can find in Turkey. It presents a very black and clean background, with ocasional white lines. This marble has limited extraction, but is a great choice for small decoration projects.

Silver Black

The Silver Black is a black coloured marble, with thin grain and fairly uniform background. This marble is not completely black, having more a really dark grey colour. In addition, this marble presents some very discreet white vein dispersely distributed in its surface. This is a Turkish marble, with a growing market.

Portoro Antalya

The Portoro Antalya is a black coloured marble, with thin grain and non-uniform background. The Portoro Antalya is characterized by its fractions or sections with black or grey colours as well as some signs of white calcite. It is extracted in Turkey and is considered by many as a future alternative to the classic Portoro marble from Italy.

We continue here the analysis of reference building projects worldwide, finished or under construction, which involved the supply of large quantities of natural stones. In this article we analyse the Algeria Mega Mosque project, which will become the 3rd largest mosque in the world.

Project

The Mohammadia Mega Mosque, also known as the Djamaâ el Djazaïr mosque, is an ongoing mosque project that is currently being built in the Bay of Algeria, in Algeria´s largest city: Algiers.

The mosque project will include a large library, research center, meeting room, praying room with capacity for roughly 120,000 worshippers, a school and a museum. The mosque will quickly become a reference building in Algeria and throughout the Arab world. The main attraction of the mosque will be a 265 meter tall minaret, which will be the tallest in the world.

The design of the mosque was responsibility of a consortium of KSP Jürgen Engel Architekten and Krebs Und Keifer. The main contractor for this project is the Chinese construction company China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC).

The construction work started in 2012 and will continue up until 2015. The mosque will open to the public in 2016 and will have a total budget of $1.3 Billion.

Stones

The Algeria Mega Mosque envolves the supply of very large quantities of natural stones. The exterior façade part of the project envolves the supply of roughly 95,000 m2 of travertine beige stone, which will be supplied directly from Turkey. Much of this exterior work will have intricate carvings with traditional Islamic filigree patterns.

Inside, the project requires the supply of a similar amount of stone for all flooring applications and coverings throughout the Mosque building and annexes. Most of the stone require for interior applications is the same Travertine beige from Turkey, but also diferente types of marble with detailed water-jet work for flooring applications.

The final result should be an amazing work supplied with the finest natural stone available. The earthy look of the Travertine beige will blend well in the local environment, while the detailed and refined marble used on the interiors will give this project an imponent and magnificent look that is expected.

The project

The Nation Towers is a project that is composed by two skyscrapers that are located in the corniche area of Abu Dhabi. The project was just finished in 2012 and includes apartments, offices, a shopping mall and a hotel. It has a total of about 280.000 square meters of usable space. Both buildings are connected by a skybridge at a height of over 200 meters, which makes this the highest skybridge in the world.

For our company, the project involved the supply of grey limestone from Portugal for the exterior façade/cladding that is located at the main entrance of the buildings, visible from the main square.

The stone

The stone supplied is called Gris Pardo and is a grey coloured limestone from Portugal. The project involved the supply of nearly 2.500 square meters of 50mm stone panels to be applied on the main cladding of the buildings, located at the main entrance.

The stone panels supplied were simply honed and straight, with no special finishing or details.

The Gris Pardo colour uniformity allowed a perfect result visually, where the grey colour integrates in perfection with the surrounding colours and environment, giving the whole building a certain class and style.

The Nation Towers quickly became a symbol of Abu Dhabi and is today a well-known in the Kingdom. In addition, the company responsible for the design of the buildings won a design award

Abu Dhabi is home to a large number of construction projects that have been taking place for quite some years now. It has a large number of projects currently happening, as well as a large number of planned projects for the near future. It is then, a very attractive market for natural stone supply. It has projects such as the New Louvre Museum, the Fairmont Hotel, Al Maryah island, the airport new Terminal building, just to mention few. And all these projects requiring a fairly large amount of natural stones. The potential for stone supply is clear and unmissable.

We analyse here this market based on our Globalstoneportal.com own statistics, feedback from visitors and customer´s enquiries. And present our findings about which are the main natural stones that are having high demand and strong need for supply on the Abu Dhabi construction market. There are probably other natural stones with high demand that are not on our catalogue, but here we present the ones we are sure about. These are:

Moca Cream limestone

Beige coloured limestone from Portugal, with a beautiful parallel vein. This limestone is mostly demanded in Abu Dhabi for cladding projects.

Jura Beige limestone

Beige limestone from Germany, the Jura Beige is a very hard type of limestone. This limestone is mostly demanded for flooring with some traffic, as well as cladding for villas.

Crema Nova marble

A beige marble from Turkey, the Crema Nova is a beige marble with high demand. This marble is mostly used on flooring applications of hotels, residencies, in combination with other coloured stones.

Grey limestones

We have seen quite some demand from Abu Dhabi for different grey limestones, with special attention to the Azul Valverde, Jura Grey or the Petit Granit.

Azul Valverde

Jura Grey

Light Emperador

This is a major light brown marble from Spain, and in Abu Dhabi seems to be fairly popular. It is commonly used in combination with other coloured marble on flooring and decoration in hotels and luxurious projects.

Dark Emperador

This is in fact the most demanded brown marble, very popular if combined with the Crema Marfil, both Spanish marble. It is mostly used on flooring applications.
